Mission accomplished / mission acomplie

English Version:

Perfectly on time, the films produced WITH the belgian team are done, included their subtitles in english.
Only these films are meant to be shown in public.

The boys are already working on the editing of their own version of the film while the girls want to produce their own film without our presence but WITH our advices. A good chance since we are here for two weeks more. We consider as a true success to be excluded from their productions from phase II. Self-sufficiency is but the one goal a trainer should aim at.

Let's hope that after our departure, this impetus won't turn out to inertia.

The films will be online soon.

ALL THE SHOOTINGS ARE DONE

ENGLISH VERSION:

Today, the exams finished, the girls were able to complete the shootings. It was more an event to shoot: the transmission of the cooking of MAKLUBA between an elder of the village - EM MARWAN- and the girls.

Dina kept camera 1 and did a fantastic job for her first shooting. B. had to take over Raneem on camera 2 for she couldn't stay until the end.

Razal took care of the sound and particularly of the wirelss microphone on Em Maran she was trained for one week ago. She also had the necessary authority to impose silence when we had to record an ambiant.

Here are some pictures taken from the shots. The two assistants to Em Mawan are Niveen and Yasmin.

Thanks for their help: Fatema Owaineh, Wisam Owaineh, Mei Shami & Michel Nasser... and of course, Em Marwan.

SINGING IN THE FIELDS / Le champ des champs

English Version

The girls' group started the workshop challenging themselves to produce a film through the dedalus of their exams: it implies finding the necessary time for the shooting as well as respecting each others availabilities, picking up a subject they could handle in this studying context and of any interest for them, their friends and family as well as a foreign audience.

The challenge was accepted with enthusiasm on the first meeting! We will meet an elder woman of the village who will take us first in the fields to gather the necessary ingredients to the traditional meal called "Maqlouba".
She will teach us then how to cook this palestinian speciality.

The purpose is to highlight the transmission between generations of the traditions that make the cultural identity of both the village and the country as well as showing a daily life aspect of Battir.

But their interest for the workshop won't stop here: Since the current exams don't let any possibility to come up with something more ambitious, the girls group has decided to concieve and produce another film when they will have more time for it, just after their exams.

To be continued.

 ENGLISH VERSION:

2 days ago, the boys - from now on reduced to the number of 3 due to general olives picking - went by themselves in Abu Jamal's field to try their abilities of interviewers. Back to the museum they were quite satisfied and when we watched the footage, it's been the chance for us to point at classic issues on such a shooting: shots too short, approximative frames, too few changes of angles, questions that implied banal answers.

So we went along with them for a new interview in an olives field, Wisam Owaineh's. It was around 2 km from the museum. Quite a lovely stroll which we took profit of to locations scouting for a forthcoming sequence. We had to leave the road and walk up (climb up sometimes) to reach this field which is actually located on a terrace on the slope of a hill. Amazing sightseeing.
We entrusted Muhammad, Ibraheem and Ala' with the tools for image and sound and they harvested this time some beautiful moments and Wisam's interview.

SECOND SESSION FOR THE BOYS / Deuxième session pour les garçons.

ENGLISH VERSION:
Always surprised by the incentive motivation of our participants, we had to give up what we were busy doing to dedicate ourselves to the workshop though the boys told us they would be unavailable :-)

B. set up KDEnlive (Linux) on Muhammad's laptop while Ala' and Ibraheem would keep on story-boarding with F. (see Photos).

We're heading to a new documentary/fiction hybrid film about the changes of mentality regarding picking olives. The beginning of the week will be dedicated to the preparation and to the interviews. The end of the week will be for the fiction part.

Each participant will install the editing program on his computer and will propose his own version of the film at the end of the process around October the 31th.

BACK TO BATTIR / retour à Battir

ENGLISH VERSION

One year after its birth, the Battir Video Workshop is officially re-launched.

Thanks to its numerous donators from Belgium and France, to Wallonie Brussels International and to La Province du Hainaut, we are now one step further: we now are two trainers along with Fatema Owaineh to assis the same boys and girls in their experiencing new ways and new tools.

As a matter of fact, we have been able to bring the following gear :

- 2 Canon camera (Vixia mini X) and their 32 Gb SD Card + accessories
- 1 GH4 Panasonic camera
- 2 Tascam digital stereo recorder and their 16 Gb SD card + accessories
- 1 Rode microphone + accessories + 1 Senheiser K6 microphone + 1 kit of Wireless microphones
- 1 tripod
- 1 special stand for microphones
- 1 editing program running under Linux (free) called Kidden Live
- 1 Lenovo laptop + 1 Macbook pro
- 4 hard disks

This gear comes in addition to the Gopro camera + accessories, the 500 Gb hard disk and the 32 Gb SD card left last year.

We've been informed before our departure that the availibility of the participants would be a problem due to their committments to their studies (they are in 11th or 12th grade) and to the olives picking.
So we have to adapt ourselves and sometimes shoot at the same time for the two groups, which means shooting with two cameras for each groups in order to make sure that we won't be short in material for the editing.
Sometimes we have to dedicate to the training only which implies as well to use several types of cameras.

The plan is now to convince Al Qattan foundation to fund this project by supporting equipment and salaries expenses on a regular basis.

We hope that with a strong training, the participants will be able to produce their own battirian production.

A very big thank you to all the discreet donators who should feel very proud for their participation of the forthcoming films. Actually there will be two new films but the participants we met so far insisted that they make another film of their own after the olives harvest. We've been delighted by this ongoing interest for documentary filming and told that as autonomisation was our purpose, we would be happy to help if they need to!

Finding the youngsters again was quite intense specially at this period of violence all around them.  They already suggested to deal with their direct concerns regardless to the situation. Their incredible maturity, their creativity (they did their story-board by themselves) fill us with pride and admiration.

The BVW team

To be continued

- 2 cameras Canon  (Vixia mini X) + 2 cartes SD 32 Gb + accessoires
- 1 camera GH4 Panasonic
- 2 enregistreur digital stereo Tascam + 2 cartes SD 16 Gb + accessoires

A suivre.

THE END

Every story has an end: this one has a happy ending because three films between 5 and 8 minutes have been created in a three weeks period. Three little stories of Battir full of meaning and understatement. Fatema Owainah found herself involved in this story which she'll be in charge to keep on going.

A full Gopro equipment has been entrusted to the local partner in order that the workshop can continue. AVS4You the editing program on which we worked, has been installed on the Battir Eco museum PC. Now what's necessary to do is raising funds to pay Fatima's wages as the responsible for the workshop.

Tomorrow we will show the result of the workshop and it's very likely that a lot of youngsters will ask for more! We've been aware from the start of the necessary sustainability of the project. Let's hope we find the means to make it.

In the meantime, here are some snapshots from the films:

THE THREE SHOOTINGS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED

Girl's group # 1: Niveen, Tasneem, Raneem, Ghazal and Raya completed their own shooting with interviewing Wisam OWINEH, junior manager at the Ecomuseum. He's the one who develops projects with partners and guide the visitors on the hiking trails. He's been asked by Niveen to talk about the Battir Ecomuseum concept and why there's nothing to see inside the museum like ancient photos of Battir he though can comment as a specialist.

The following day was dedicated to complete the Boy's shooting: Ala, Ahmad, Nagi, Ibraheem, Ameer and Waleed were on the starting blocks and even if we had to do some retakes, they were patient and focused.
We first met Ala's grand father - a former mathematics teacher - and Ala asked him about Battir irrigation system and how he lived the Nakba in Battir. A beautiful moment.

Yesterday was the second group of girls'turn. They had fixed everything with ATIDAL one of the councellers in the village council of Battir. She has inherited several olive fields all located in the buffer zone, beyond the railway track that separates palestinian from israelian territories. Her problem is that she has a long and dangerous way to go to reach them. Ghazal did the interview and filmed a few shots along with Razan, Sandy Dina and Jasmine.

We are now ready for phase 3, the editing itself.

BOYS' TURN

Yep. The boys' first shooting has been a lot of fun has you can imagine watching this photo taken from a special shot from the Battir's spring. We can assure that no harm has been done to any camera of any sort :-)

FIRST SHOOTING

Yesterday was an important step forward in the process since the two groups of girls had to finish their script. The one on picking olives and resistance will be very demanding in terms of logistic: they'll have to ask the participation of a family who will go to their olive field by a road that's blocked  before they can get to it.

The other group will make a film about Battir and its ecomuseum. Wisam who's used to hike with groups of visitors was precisely about to take one of them on trail 1. We then decided to film their depature and here's a  photograph taken from this very first shooting of this group.
